Personality:

On first glance, Nami seems to be often the “only straight (wo)man” in the Strawhat Crew, usually being the voice of reason and the one to get annoyed or incredulous at the various shenanigans the others get up to. She is intelligent, logical and good at thinking up plans and usually also giving instructions to the others as to how things should get done (of course, they rarely end up according to plan). As the navigator, she is also responsible for keeping their ship on course and watching the weather; she is someone who is good at observing her surroundings and making quick decisions.

She is also very ambitious, as exemplified by her dream, drawing a map of all the seas. But her dream is always second to her love and compassion and determination to help those in need of help. All the horrors she went through at the hands of those who killed her mother, she endured to save her home town, and in Punk Hazard, she steadfastly refused to abandon the abducted children, even though it had nothing to do with their mission, nor had they ever seen these children before. She used to be more guarded and slow to trust others -- a necessity born of so many years of working alone -- only using them to her own gain (and the gain of her town, as she was stealing to collect money to buy their freedom), but after joining Luffy and the others, she becomes more cheerful, open and trusting of her companions. She has absolute trust in their abilities, knowing their friendship is strong enough to withstand anything, and she is absolutely determined in helping her nakama: she was the one who got everyone up from their slump in Enies Lobby, to help save Robin – showing that she understands them and knows them well enough to know what it is that will make them regain their motivation again. Her kindness and compassion also shows in her being able to forgive those who have wronged her (like she forgives Hachi, a member of the crew that terrorized her home town), and in her being able to withstand pain if it is for her friends’ sake.

In the dynamic of the crew, Nami is definitely not one of the stronger fighters, but despite that, she is always willing to help her friends, training during their two years apart in order to become a better fighter and a better navigator. She openly admits to being something of a scaredy-cat sometimes, not hesitating to run and let the stronger ones take the fight; she is not a coward like Usopp, but instead her reluctance to get into fights (and especially fights she knows she can’t win) has to do with her survival instinct: she has had to take care of herself and survive alone, which means she knows of the world’s dangers and has a more realistic image of the world than some of her nakama. But when she knows she can do her part, or when their adversaries have deigned to hurt her friends, there is no hesitation as she will stand her ground, unafraid, defeating her enemies with a lightning strike and a mischievous grin. This mischievous part (as well as that certain selfishness) of hers shows also in that she often throws her friends under a bus, so to speak, placing the blame on them if she is suspected of something (never serious, though), to avoid being blamed or captured: when her fact finding mission in Film Z goes slightly wrong, she points at Usopp and tells the Marines it was him who told her to ask the questions.

So while Nami is, for the most part and especially when compared to someone more whimsical and reckless like Luffy, level-headed and intelligent, she also has a sense of humour and can be silly at times, as well. One of her essential “silly” (and perhaps a little less admirable) qualities is her greed and love of money, and the way she charges everyone for what she does for them: at the moment, probably most of the crew owes her ridiculous sums of money, for the most trivial things. She is not called the “cat burglar” for nothing: she is a proficient thief, stealing from people easily and without being noticed, and often her shopping can be called nearly stealing as well, as she often demands ridiculous reductions in prices. Her love of shopping is another thing, showing that in many ways, she is a "girly girl", loving new clothes and outfits, never afraid to wear little clothes, knowing she is pretty enough for it. She also uses this to her advantage in many ways, flirting with men in order to gain information, or maybe just a free drink. She is the very definition of opportunist in many ways, even though she does place her friendships in the first place… if only by a small margin. She never hesitates to take advantage of a situation, whether it is Sanji showering her with drinks and delicious food, or using the debt owed to her by a famous fashion designer to buy everything in the store with maximum discounts.

As it is, she is also quick-tempered and easily annoyed, especially at the more ridiculous antics of her friends. If they act stupidly (as they often do) or inappropriately (I am looking at you Brook), there is not even a second between that and her quick retaliation, usually in the form of a beating on the head. And while it was mentioned that she is usually the one to think of the plans and tell people what to do, that is not only because she is smart, but also because she is a bossy person, often ordering people around, even the crew’s captain.

Overall, Nami is a cheerful, smart and realistic girl, quick to both laughter and annoyed huffs, getting angry only when someone she loves has been hurt, or when something truly wrong has been done. She is quick-thinking, has a good survival instinct, born of her years of taking care of herself. She is kind and compassionate, a good friend with a clear insight on feelings. She might be slightly devilish in her greed and her saving herself in difficult situations, but her friends are always the most important to her, and she would risk everything for them, be it her life or a nice reward of 1 million beli.
